http://jes.sagepub.com/cgi/pdf_extract/22/1/103?ck=nck here is link to something about DER BUTT...GRASS and HANDKE both being cooks ought to make peace and break bread together. There was also last year's incident of Handke saying every 17 year old knew about the SS, a shame etc. What did P.H. know as a 17 year old in 1959 about politics??? you have to be from a family that got severely involved in politics a family that talks to become politicized at an early age. "grass dances like an elephant" the american critic irving howe observed, rather unfairly also about Blechtrommel... but it is true, he is awfully cumbersome compared to handke... on the other hand, handke's sole subject in his prose is himself... so i read him for the way he writes.... chiefly.. that is for his self.
i believe that das reich-kanickel then tried to make peace, he kept writing handke and handke claimed to have sent the letters back unopened but rr, as an old polish spy, could tell whether a letter had been opened and glued back shut. that reminds me of handke once admitting how he could lie like the dickens. i know of other instancees.
rr hat sich handke gegenueber von einer kleinlichkeit benommen die ihm alles paebstliche wegtut. handke of course especially hated the fact that unseld, the smart gauner, then used rr for commercial puposes at insel verlag! vide NIEMANSBUCHT.
well, Langsame Heimkehr was mostly written in ny in the hotel adams and turned into a fragment. and he told his then farrar strauss editor [nancy maseiles].. that he had fucked it up. i couldn't care less that his original grandiose plan came to naught. the Alaska chapter is all that really counts and then the bit around san francisco. perhaps handke gave it another try in spain. he was really stuck, he had carried the opening sentence with him for years, and then didn't get anywhere, got no traction, he recently claimed that that was the only time he had some pills prescribed; another lie; i know that he fiddled a bit with it after he left n.y. whether in spain or the south of france prior to the 'lesson of st. victoire'... there is more about this in DEM HANDKE AUF DIE SCHLICHE...
perhaps berger got the preis for his essays. that preis is not entirely unpolitical as literary politics go.
